What is lochia?Updated 20 days ago
(Laa·kee·uh)
The blood that comes out after giving birth is called lochia, and it's a combination of blood, mucus, and uterine tissue. Lochia is a normal part of the body's process of getting rid of the blood and tissue that was inside the uterus after the baby is born.
Lochia, or vaginal bleeding after a C-section, typically lasts about six weeks, but can vary from person to person. Some people may have traces of lochia for up to eight weeks.
Lochia is typically heavier and dark red in color for up to 10 days after giving birth, and then transitions into lighter bleeding or spotting that can last for four to six weeks after delivery.
