How do I use a condom?Updated 21 days ago

Below are specific FDA guidelines on how to use a condom.

IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION

  • Latex condoms reduce the risk of transmitting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by providing a barrier against the source of the infection. However, they do not completely eliminate the risks of pregnancy and STIs. Latex condoms are most effective against STIs, such as HIV infection (AIDS) and gonorrhea, that are spread by contact with the head of the penis. Condoms are less effective against STIs, such as HPV and herpes, that can also be spread by contact with infected skin not covered by the condom. For additional information on condoms, STIs, and pregnancy protection, or if you believe you have an STI, contact a health care provider or public agency.
  • If you have questions about birth control options, particularly because of health reasons for avoiding pregnancy, consult a health care provider.

INTENDED USE

  • If used properly, latex condoms will help to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV infection (AIDS) and many other sexually transmitted diseases, including chlamydia infections, genital herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, hepatitis B, and syphilis.

HOW DO I USE A CONDOM?

  1. Use a new condom and check the expiration date for each act of sex. Lesions, pre-ejaculate secretions, semen, vaginal secretions, and blood can all transmit infectious organisms.
  2. Tear open the package carefully. Do not use fingernails, teeth, or anything that can damage the condom.
  3. Before any sexual contact, place the condom on the head of the erect penis. Be sure the rolled-up ring is on the outside.
  4. Squeeze tip gently so no air is trapped inside. There should be some space at tip to hold semen when you come.
  5. Hold tip while you unroll condom all the way to the base of the erect penis. If the condom doesn't unroll easily, it may be on backwards, damaged, or too old. Throw it away and start over with a new condom.

HOW DO I REMOVE A CONDOM?

  1. Immediately after ejaculation, hold the condom in place and withdraw the penis while it is still erect so the condom does not fall off.
  2. To remove the condom, use one hand to pull the condom from the tip and simultaneously use the other hand to push the base of the condom up towards the tip of the penis. Avoid spilling semen.
  3. Dispose of a used condom by wrapping it in tissue and throwing it into the trash.
  4. To reduce the chance of bacterial infection, both partners should wash their hands, genitals, and surrounding areas with soap and water or with a cleansing wipe. For females, pee after vaginal intercourse.

PRECAUTIONS

  • Caution: This product contains natural rubber latex which may cause allergic reactions. This product is coated with a silicone-based lubricant. Some users are sensitive or allergic to lubricants. If you or your partner has had any reaction to latex rubber or lubricants, do not use this product. If any partner has an allergic reaction to this product, stop use and see your doctor.
  • For additional lubrication use a water-based or silicone-based lubricant. DO NOT USE OIL-BASED LUBRICANTS, such as those made with petroleum jelly, mineral oil, vegetable oil, or cold cream as these damage the condom.
  • If a female partner is using vaginal products for medical treatment purposes, the condom may be weakened and its effectiveness may be reduced.
  • Do not reuse condoms.
  • If the rubber material is sticky or brittle or obviously damaged, do not use the condom. If the color is uneven or changed, do not use the condom.
  • Wash hands, genitalia, and surrounding areas before and after sex to reduce the chance of bacterial infection.
  • Store latex condoms in a cool, dry place (below 100ºF) and avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
